David
has had a long and prestigous career. He studied at
the Slade School of Fine Art and has lectured at
Nottingham Art College and the Royal College of Art,
London.
He has exhibited throughout the UK and abroad including at the Natural History Museum, London, and in the United States with the ‘Artists for Nature Fund Touring Show’. In 2000 David won the BBC Wildlife Magazine Award. David’s work is held in the collection of the Natural History Museum, London, as well as in many private collections.
In the 1970’s David was featured alongside David Bellamy in the BBC Television’s ‘Bellamy’s Britain’. In the episode ‘David’s Meadow’, showcased his pioneering work in studying and drawing butterflies in the field.
In the tradition of a nineteenth century artist and naturalist David has kept detailed field diaries of his area in and around Southwell, Nottinghamshire. He has recently established a regular painting rythm in Cressbrookdale, Derbyshire.
“These (watercolours) are made directly without alterations, responding to the same set of features within my view according to the season, changes in weather or changes within oneself. It is not infrequent to find I’ve laboured too long and end up with a too faithful representation. Then in my last half an hour before I leave I try at speed to paint a fresh response, a more economic version that retains the conviction whilst using a more bold and simple execution. I want to accumulate a group of works that encapsulates Cressbrook during the entire year.”
