Well
known as a bird artist Dan's interest in dragonflies
took off when they colonised a new habitat initiative
in a local nature reserve, in Titchfield Haven. Dan
was able to use his considerable experience of
drawing and painting birds in their environment, to
depict dragonflies as they really exist. Often
depicting dragonflies on the wing, were given an
insight to fleeting glimpses of dragonfly hunting,
courtship displays, pairing, egg laying and resting.
Field craft is at the essence of Dans work; he
adamantly refused to use a butterfly net to capture
dragonflies in order to enforce a greater degree of
observation. They are as he has seen them unaware of
his presence.
Dan Powell has received an Artists for Nature Award and the Bird Illustrator of the Year Award.
His work has appeared in numerous wildlife and conservation publications & books over the years - including The Red Kite and Barn Owl - Arlequin Press and The Bird Table Book with Tony Soper.
